I may have been needlessly worrying about a conflict with how MacPorts likes its downloaded packages to stay organized.
It looks like distinct Mac packages could each live in /opt/local/var/macports/software and be linked from /etc/gnumed /usr/bin/gnumed /usr/share/gnumed
