I was linking to that essay mainly to provide a cite for the Hoare quote! There's plenty to disagree with in it, such as the idea that learning assembly language has much to do with today's art of optimisation in the normal case, whereas my perception is that it's all about efficient algorithms, network latency, disk seeks and cache consistency. The proper rule is "optimize as late as possible, but no later". I think that Monotone has made the right tradeoffs here and Git has optimized early, but unfortunately not all users are patient enough for this sort of approach...
