I generally start rp normally, then on a text terminal I run emacs and connect 
gdb to the running process (gdb ratpoison <pid>) type 'cont' to continue the 
process when it segfaults I jump to the text terminal and emacs is waiting with 
my point in the source file on the line it crashed .
