be able to login normally via ssh - but only with sftp, which is very
limited (and I don't want that). So the second option is not possible.

How can I get the --use-scp option. My options are:
duplicity version 0.6.06 running on linux2.

You can download 0.6.14 from https://launchpad.net/duplicity/+download.

There is a PPA for duplicity at https://launchpad.net/~duplicity-team/+archive/ppa.

I don't know what distribution you're using, but if you have installed from a repository you will need to remove that version prior to installing the tar version of the installer.
