X should work with stock packages if you set it to use fbdev:

 Section "Device"
        Identifier      "Configured Video Device" 
        Driver          "fbdev"
        Option          "UseFBDev"              "true"
 EndSection

this is much less hassle.  I'll see what I can do to automate it.
