FWIW, the default emacs seems to startup a bit _faster_ than vim these
days, if they're in the disk cache (the code size is roughly comparable,
but emacs typically has a huge data segment due to all the preloaded lisp):

   (miles) time emacs -nw -q -f kill-emacs
   real 0m0.145s
   user 0m0.030s
   sys 0m0.030s

   (miles) time vim +q
   real 0m0.193s
   user 0m0.050s
   sys 0m0.040s

   (miles) time emacs -q -f kill-emacs
   real 0m0.500s
   user 0m0.250s
   sys 0m0.040s

   (miles) time vim -g +q
   real 0m0.614s
   user 0m0.380s
   sys 0m0.060s

[times are the median of several runs]

What really kills you with emacs is if you got a giant bloated .emacs
file like most of us do...

A zen-buddhist walked into a pizza shop and
said, "Make me one with everything."
