For interactive tone mapping you might want to look at these papers:

  1. N. Goodnight, R. Wang, C. Wooley and G. Humphreys, Interactive
Time-Dependent Tone Mapping Using Programmable Graphics Hardware,
     Proceedings of Eurographics 2003.

  2. A. Artusi, J. Bittner, M. Wimmer and A. Wilkie, Delivering
Interactivity to Complex Tone Mapping Operators, Eurographics
     Symposium on Rendering 2003.

  3. Fr\'edo Durand and Julie Dorsey, Interactive Tone Mapping,
Proceedings of the Eurographics Workshop on Rendering 2000.

  4. A. Scheel, M. Stamminger and H.-P. Seidel, Tone Reproduction for
Interactive Walkthroughs, Proceedings of Eurographics 2000.

The first one is probably of most interest to you.
