Another update:

I started downloading all the headers from alt.binaries.dvd as a test, 
it gets to what seems like the end and then hangs up.  I kill pan and 
restart it and it hangs opening the group.  I delete my $home/.pan and 
rebuild pan and now I get the following errors when I try and download 
from that group:
(Null) - file message-source.c: line 123 
(message_sources_add_from_xref): assertion `server_quark != 0' failed
(Null) - file message-source.c: line 123 
(message_sources_add_from_xref): assertion `server_quark != 0' failed
(Null) - file message-source.c: line 123

(message_sources_add_from_xref): assertion `server_quark != 0' failed

(message_sources_add_from_xref): assertion `server_quark != 0' failed

After I killed PAN the following errors appeared in the terminal:
(Null) - file server.c: line 508 (server_is_valid): assertion 
`server->_group_memchunk!=NULL' failed
(Null) - file group.c: line 578 (group_is_valid): assertion 
`server_is_valid (group->server)' failed
(Null) - file article.c: line 1268 (article_is_valid): assertion 
`group_is_valid(a->group)' failed
(Null) - file article.c: line 774 (article_alloc_part): assertion 
`article_is_valid(article)' failed

Other groups seem to download ok at this time but I haven't tried a 
large group.  Does anyone have a suggestion on another large group to 
test with?
