Another update:

I started downloading all the headers from alt.binaries.dvd as a test, it gets to what seems like the end and then hangs up. I kill pan and restart it and it hangs opening the group. I delete my $home/.pan and rebuild pan and now I get the following errors when I try and download from that group: (Null) - file message-source.c: line 123 (message_sources_add_from_xref): assertion `server_quark != 0' failed (Null) - file message-source.c: line 123 (message_sources_add_from_xref): assertion `server_quark != 0' failed (Null) - file message-source.c: line 123 (message_sources_add_from_xref): assertion `server_quark != 0' failed (Null) - file message-source.c: line 123 (message_sources_add_from_xref): assertion `server_quark != 0' failed (Null) - file message-source.c: line 123 (message_sources_add_from_xref): assertion `server_quark != 0' failed (Null) - file message-source.c: line 123 (message_sources_add_from_xref): assertion `server_quark != 0' failed (Null) - file message-source.c: line 123 (message_sources_add_from_xref): assertion `server_quark != 0' failed

After I killed PAN the following errors appeared in the terminal:
(Null) - file server.c: line 508 (server_is_valid): assertion `server->_group_memchunk!=NULL' failed (Null) - file group.c: line 578 (group_is_valid): assertion `server_is_valid (group->server)' failed (Null) - file article.c: line 1268 (article_is_valid): assertion `group_is_valid(a->group)' failed (Null) - file article.c: line 774 (article_alloc_part): assertion `article_is_valid(article)' failed

Other groups seem to download ok at this time but I haven't tried a large group. Does anyone have a suggestion on another large group to test with?

Well I spoke too soon! ;)

After downloading some binaries it gave this error on two files:
(Null) - file article.c: line 491 (articles_set_decode_state): assertion `qty >= 1' failed

In both cases it did download the file fine but it never acknowledged that it was downloaded. I allowed me to download the files again and again saving multiple copies...

Certainly not a big error, but I wanted to let someone know!

Thanks again for the great update!

After running it for a day on Ubuntu no problems found yet! Great job!

I've just landed some huge changes into CVS that does some very dramatic things to large binaries newsgroups:

* Much, much smaller memory footprint:
  A group with 133,000 articles now eats 19 meg instead of 63 meg!

* Big groups thread faster and show up in the header pane MUCH faster.

* The data files in ~/.pan/servername/ roughly 50% smaller.

I've been playing with it for a few days now and these gains seem to have no downside, so if anyone else wants to give it a spin, I'd very much like to get more people testing this out.
