Mandrake? And the RPMs I make for RedHat don't work? I bet they would if
you installed the gcc3 rpms!


Maybe the problem is your gcc. I think there is no official GCC 2.96, as
you recall, just a RedHat snapshot. We had tons of trouble with it when
they released RH7.0.  You could install gcc3 and try.

This intrigues me that the java version doe snot match the jre version.
That makes me think you have redundant packages installed. If you
install the full jdk1.3.1, it includes the runtime environment and the
hotspot client.  If that is what you have done, OK, but if you have
installed different editions of jdk and jre, it could explain trouble.

I think "maybe" is "for sure" here.

I wonder why you couldn't take the SRPM I build and edit the SPEC file
to tell it where your JAVA is and then rebuild it on your system to make
an RPM for Mandrake.
