i don't know why you'd get that when running the java version,
but in general my experience is that a common cause
of that error is not having the
X11 server/client stuff set up right...that is, swarm
can't open windows on your screen for one
reason or another.

does that java version support the --batch parameter
on the run time command?  if so, try it with that.
if it works, then is is very likely you don't
have the DISPLAY stuff set up right.
