going off of marco's last msg, patrons are the library users, the guys and gals that walk in off the street or whatever and sign up with the library. i think we will create our own database using a constant xml format. this will make it easier to manipulate now and integration of plugins will be much simpler. as for the website, it needs to be sleek and clean-cut. i have an account at freeshell.org that can be used if savannah is not the better choice. i choose to have the patrons use a web browser to search through catalogs and VIEW their information that the library has on them. i think staff should run another frontend/gui to work from. maybe later we can add a web browser implementation where the staff can do what they need to, but i really dont want the patrons to be able to edit their account in any possible way without the assistance of staff, but if that is too much of a hassle then we an have them edit parts of their account. the automatic updating is a very good idea. but lets make it automatically install, without asking, but tell the user its updating and to give it a few mins. im all for the gui with of course text based possibilities. using perl as i am, Tk is a possibility, along with GLADE, but the latter has a whole new language to pick up before it can be used which may be more than its worth.

>9. Do we need a chat room to have real time discussions?

>great idea, in my library there are two floors, a chat room can be very
>useful.  This can be implemented as a plugin.

lol i think you took that wrong. i think it was meant do WE, the programmers, need a chat room to discuss instead of implementing it into firefly. but that is a possibility.

language wise, im not sure up to this point. perl works for me for now. Tk is giving me crap, but i guess i really need to learn it better before i can fully toss it out.

your process of breaking it down and starting with the db is good. the only thing i can recommend is that we keep in mind that plugins will follow later. also what is i18n?

>2. Call up book reviews from say Amazon(not limited to)
whew. that might be more of a hassle than anything else. but hey, we'll give what the ppl want.

well class is almost out so i end it here. lets start a chat room in relic.net or something so this can go faster. also, what timezone are you in marco? may be helpful for us to know when bedtime is over there.  /gimpy/
