        Yah, the problem isn't really about the patent or some sort of constant 
changing by the Powers That Be(altho at least one person on the list has been 
taking it that way).  It's more real world than that - it's the in-the-field 
reality of the way that numerous app developers have been releasing tiff 
support.  In theory, everyone follows the standards, all is well.  In 
reality, some of them, as Deke alludes to, have endless issues.  I can't 
explain why tiff in particular is plagued with these problems(probably it's 
sheer popularity), but it is nonetheless.

        These may be referred to by some as "ignorance and historical accidents 
", 
but the rest of us call it working with applications in the field.
