I've made some progress on getting stumpwm to run.
If I bypass asdf altogether, and load everything by hand (so to
speak), or if I use asdf and replace ":depends-on (:clx :port)" by
":depends-on (:port)", then stumpwm will start.  The window takes up
the whole screen and pressing C-t changes the cursor, but none of the
commands work.
Well, it's a start.
