Thanks for the help Marcus.  At least I get a different error this time!

Wrong type argument: char-or-string-p, nil

This would explain the problem with Makefile.common at least.  Looking
at java-stub.elc, I need emacs 19.29, but thats no problem as we have
emacs 20.3.1.  Unfortunately my knowledge of emacs and elisp is incredibly 
limited, does anyone know how to get a more informative error message
from emacs?
