I still can't get it to work.
I've got the code in a folder with a random .png file I've called ant.png,
so that shouldn't be the problem.
What is the significance of the two lines:
        String appDir = Globals.env.arguments.getAppDataPath ();
      pixmapC.setDirectory (appDir);

With the new hdf5-1.4 and Swarm-2.1.51.20010320 I posted during the
night, I am able to run the test program without trouble. I suspect you
might not have the ant.png file in your directory, or some other setup
problem.  I can't get gdb to tell me anything about java programs, so I
can't tell you how to debug. All I can say is that on my system with the
new swarm, the test application runs perfectly.
