Not to negate your point for using tags here but in many cases cues are so that a line can be played by a substitute instrument when the intended instrument is not available. In those cases the conductor needs the cues in the score to know what substitutions are easily possible.


True, but that's a decision to be made by the user. In some cases (mostly
wind band and musicals, in my experience) these cue notes are useful; in
other cases (say, a Romantic symphony for full orchestra) those cue notes would
not be good.  We should let the user/publisher decide for themselves.

I completely agree and thought that might have been understood by my comment. I commented because Juergen didn't imply any choice here.

This might also even be true with the romantic symphony for full orchestra example which might be played by an amateur orchestra. The orchestra I play with has often enough played with less than the full number of wind players by doing a slight variation on the composer's intention.
