Yes.
Actually the pipe symbol '|' just *check* there is effectively a bar
line at this precise place and gives a warning if this check fails.
This ensure you did not make a mistake while entering your rhythm and
permit you to find easier where your rhythm is wrong (thanks to the
warning that gives you the error's line number).

Sorry if I'm not clear, I'm sure it is way better explained in the doc.

Normal bar lines are calculated and put automatically by LilyPond.
To force a bar line you have to use the \bar command.

Yes, it is odd.
But these bar lines seems thicker.  IMO they should be replaced by
double bar lines \bar "||" to be in agreement with music engraving
rules (but I'm not an expert).

That's maybe because you did not enter slur command!  ;D

You used the brackets, which are used to display beams.  There is no
beam attached to a half note!

To display a slur you have to use parenthesizes :
c2( b)

But if you want to express a melisma (cf. Lyrics) without printing a
slur, you'd better use
c2\melisma b\melismaEnd
