Thanks, there seems a serious BUG.

My steps

The latest commit is 
93136169cba9c7c8f827dbc2f579b95a75d15fad


    1) I apply your patch.
    2) I run ./configure --prefix=/opt/emacs29 --with-x-toolkit=athena 
--without-pop --with-mailutils
    3) I run make bootstrap
    4) Make
    5) cd src
    6) ./emacs
    7) I obtain two screens I attach

Button line it might be athena, I will try to recompile without athena

But I cannot send even a BUG report from the new version!
