Not for my purposes, they're not.

I had to tell an XEmacs user "no, XEmacs won't do what gedit can do
because XEmacs is a programmers' editor, and programmers have
historically actively disliked that feature, so it's not likely to be
added soon" (namely, good support for one-line-per-paragraph text).  I
don't feel good about that (even though I share the prejudice against
that kind of text).

I don't think arch should deprecate plain text files just because
they're not source.
