********** MORE INFORMATION ********************************

EAWAG is an abbreviation for Swiss Federal Institute of Environmental
Sciences and Technology. It is closely linked to the Swiss Federal
Institute of Technology, Zürich. The institute's activities comprise
research, consulting and teaching. It is an interdisciplinary environment
with natural scientiest, engineers, economists and sociologists. More
recently the institute's emphasis has shifted towards questions related to
sustainable development.
The research focus of my group lies on model development and integrated
assessment. We develop integrated models to assist processes of decision
making. The models are of different kind and range from scenario generators
to agent based models. More specifically we currently explore in the
context of regional climate change new methods to develop an
information-model platform using internet technology. This platform will be
used in interactive group discussions with citizens, politicians and
business representatives.

The person I am looking for is expected to further develop the methodology
of agent based modelling in the context of the projects mentioned above. We
have a collaboration with the Santa Fe Institute and use the simulation
platform SWARM for agent based modelling. The first task would be the
development of a class library for a collaborative project with the
engineering department where we develop economic-technical models for water
resource managment. Other projects are related to the evolutionary dynamics
of economic systems in particular regarding the process of induced
technological change. In this context similar questions arise - eg. the
modelling of networks comprising several hierarchical levels, the
representation of agent's strategies, etc. An important task of the new
programmer/modeller would be concerned with developments at this more
general level. He/she would further assist other users in implementing
their specific models. Overall the position comprises thus a certain extent
of service. However, depending on the candidate's interest it leaves ample
room for own initiative.

It is a soft money position funded by the Swiss National Foundation. The
funding is limited to a period of approximately two years. However, since
the research program on integrated assessment is currently in the process
of growth an extension is quite likely.
