So, I've spent hours tonight scouring the various websites, as well as the 
source/binary distribution (versions 2.5.22 and 2.5.28), and I can't seem 
to find a comprehensive, authoritative document detailing the gui 
protocol.  The closest I found is this:

What did all the people who developed the various gui clients use as their 
reference?
