Re: Swarm Journal

Y'all,

I've been mulling over the points raised by Nelson in this discussion.

As the right honorable member of the Hive points out a) ultimately the
results of ABM research should be disseminated through "traditional
channels" b) anyone can publish his models and working papers on the web
- we don't need a formal Swarm journal to do that.

I couldn't agree more, but...

...what really attracted me to the idea in the first place was the fact
that a regular newsletter, gazette, journal, whatever with articles and
papers about Swarm and ABM could help to focus discussion within this
fledgling community. If I understand the Swarm project correctly it had
two main objectives, to create a platform and a community of users
around this platform that would share tools and ideas.

Glen has pointed out that one way to organize a journal would be for
authors to publish links to their work on the web and invite others to
review and scrutinize their models. We could argue that the links on
the Swarm community page and announcements in the Weekly Pheromone
constitute a forum of this kind, and what is needed is simply a
reorganization of the
http://www.santafe.edu/projects/swarm/users/user-community.html webpage.

So the question remains, do we just wait for autopoiesis to take off (do
nothing) or do we need to throw a catalyst (publishing schedule, call
for papers, editorial board etc.) into the brew?

I'd like to hear opinions from more people in this discussion. It should
be noted that so far the reaction has been rather underwhelming which
would indicate that this proposed gazette could be stillborn.

Regards,
-Benedikt
