Please, do not care about balancing the logo width with the menu! Note the 
menu width depend on the font size. So you can not control it, as it is 
exposed at the below Victor's screenshot [1].

Besides, I do not think the current logo is bad.
It looks good both at
    http://www.tuxjournal.net/?p=1184
and at:
    http://gnuherds.org/


A big logo is not good for small resolutions or handheld devices.

Additionally, if we re-size the logo we should to it from the Gimp source 
image to avoid losing fonts and effects quality. Besides, I noted you did an 
asymmetric re-size.
